Back to School Sewing for the Little

The Little is back at preschool this year. This summer he’s grown quite a bit, so I figured he needed a few new items for his wardrobe to get him through the fall. Since we wear tees and shorts until November, that’s what I decided to make!

I’ve had this dinosaur jersey knit from Raspberry Creek Fabrics since last fall, and finally decided to sew it up. I had the perfect Cotton Lycra solid navy coordinate on hand, too!

For the patterns, I went with the Be Active Shorts from Ellie and Mac. I had just sewn up my first pair (that post is here) and couldn’t wait to sew another! For the top, I chose a new to us pattern, the Kids Discoverer Tee, also from Ellie and Mac. They are having a 50% off all patterns all month long for back to school! The perfect time to grab those patterns you’ve been eyeing!

The Discoverer Tee has fun color blocking built into the front and back of the shirt. I chose the navy for the top, sleeves, and neckband for a smooth look. The dinos went on the bottom main panel of both the front and back of the shirt. I made a straight 3T, so we’d have some growing room. Unless it is event sewing, I usually size up when sewing for the little so my makes last a while.

I made the pattern as is, only adding a tiny bit of length to the bottom hem and sleeves. I prefer hemming with a 1″ hem allowance, so this was to accommodate my preference.

For the Be Active Shorts, I went with solid navy shorts and waistband and Dino accent at the bottom. I almost added in inseam pockets from another pattern, but last minute skipped them. I think for my next pair I’ll take the time and add in pockets!

I love these two items together… and they’ll be great separates, also! They are pretty darn matchy matchy, but not overkill for a three year old.

As I was sewing, I wanted to try out a new underwear pattern. The Speedy Pants by Made by Jack’s Mum are free when you sign up for the newsletter, so I jumped on those. I made him a pair of the boxers with the same fabrics to test it out. They are great! A little longer than the SUAT Kids Boxerwear pattern I’ve been using-plus a bit faster. No butt seam, and the front piece doesn’t have a dart.
